Welcome to Take 5, your place to take 5 minutes (or less) and learn more about a new craft (or in this case, mass-produced party staple) beer.
Take 5 is spending the next couple of months sampling the best (and worst) that Europe has to offer. We will be exploring Spain, France, and Italy, seeing what the average tourist can expect out of Europe’s beer culture.
The Beer:
The Mexican Corona, Sol is a mainstay in Mexico as well as much of Spain. Its clear bottle and light color are quite reminiscent of it’s better marketed rival, Corona. Sol comes out of Monterry Mexico, from Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery, which is part of the Heineken empire. Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma also produces such well known beers as Dos Equis and Carta Blanca.
The Smell:
Being a light beer to begin with, there isn’t too much aroma to speak of. Some hops for sure, but Sol keeps it simple by not adding too many layers.
The Taste:
A light, sweet, grain taste with a little hint of hops here and there. The taste slowly dissolves away, leaving basically zero aftertaste. Sol almost gives a Corona-esque vibe, where the focus is less on flavor and more on refreshment.
The Feel:
The whole point of Sol is to be a refreshing summer brew. Luckily, it does that very well. The beer is crisp and light, both in your mouth and in your stomach. The carbonation is strong enough to keep it refreshing, but not too much to distract from the liquid itself.
ad finem (to end):
I had a hard time finding Coronas in Spain. Aside from a couple of ‘bucket o’ beer’ specials Coronas were nowhere to be found. If you’re craving some Corona then this is your go-to alternative. A great pairing with a hot day on the beach, or way to refresh after a long day of sightseeing, Sol has got you covered.
